I construct my paintings using (personal) signs and symbols like Jan Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait but in my own idiosyncratic way. I have been making the odd self-portrait without using the physical self. The body/face is replaced with objects and ovals. In the painting installation Portrait of the Favourite, the (oval) mirror, mirrors itself. Some of these metaphorical self-portraits have taken on the form of painting installations, consisting of more than one element – a body with disparate parts. Nether Region is comprised of such figurative symbols and (painted) bodily extensions.
